I came to the APT Delaware Valley Chapter the way so many have before me, through the Graduate Historic Preservation Program at the University of Pennsylvania. I was fortunate to attend the 2022 Annual Conference in Detroit during my second year, and met many members of the chapter through my coursework at Penn. I was familiar with APT prior to moving to Philadelphia in 2021. While working in Charleston, South Carolina, I attended meetings for the APT Southeast Chapter.
The Southeast Chapter had lapsed prior to 2017. I watched as the co-chairs reconvened professionals spread out across 8 states, and worked to regain 501(c)(3) status, and build membership and adequate funding. The process was slow-going but the enthusiasm for the chapter began to build. Moving to Philadelphia, it was exciting to be part of a chapter with a long history and an active, passionate membership. After observing the difficulty of reviving a chapter, I had a greater appreciation for a chapter that is well established, hosting regular symposia, workshops, networking events, and celebrations. The time and effort required to host these events are not lost on me, and I have enjoyed getting a glimpse of the inner workings of the Board and the history of the chapter this past year through my involvement with the 40th Anniversary Committee. Witnessing the robust cohort of previous Board members and longtime chapter members at the 40th anniversary celebration displayed the dedication required to sustain a successful APT chapter.
The quality, and quantity, of learning opportunities through the DVC have motivated my interest in joining the Board of Directors. I appreciate the opportunity to join the Directors who make these events possible, educating professionals and students in our field and connecting us with one another to advance the field of preservation.
